The Pearl

Explain the symbolism embodied in the last line of the novel,

"And the music of pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared."

In your response, refer to:

2) The repeated symbolic motif of music
3) The pearl itself (such as hope, opportunity, evil, greed)
4) The effect of the pearl on Kino's family
5) The pearl's symbolism in the society in which Kino lives

  1. The last line in the pearl symbolizes the end, the end of the greed, the hopes, the danger. Its the end of all of Juana's and Kino's suffering. The pearl is like a great power but very unstable and can turn against the holder, or it can bring the holder his dreams.

  2. The last line of the story symbolizes the end of the adventure. Throwing the Pearl into the water means that the good and bad of it all is over. The pearl had brought hope and dreams for Kino's family. But it also brought fear, greed, and sorrow. The affect on Kino's family was one of mostly sadness. It was a learning experience for everyone though. The pearl's symbolism in society is of greed. The best of things can bring out the worst in people.

  3. The last line shows that Kino and Juana are no longer under the influence of the pearl, and the greed and evil that it brought to their family is now gone. I think the music foreshadowed events and also set the mood for the situation. But the music changed for the pearl throughout the story. In the beginning, the pearl gave off beautiful music. By the end though, the pearl produced music of evil. I think this shows that Kino views the pearl as a miracle at first, then he eventually thinks the pearl is complete evil. The pearl affects Kino's family in negative and positive ways. It brings hope and potential to the future of Coyotito, and to Kino and Juana. But it also brings out the human trait of greed, and violence in Kino. The pearl could symbolize many things, but in the society where Kino lives, I think it symbolizes that everything good has some evil. That no matter how valuable the pearl it, it can never be completely good, it must have some evil.

  4. The symbolism of the quote is about greed. It shows that when they finally got rid of the pearl it was over. The greed was gone. When the music had ended it gave up the danger, evil, and hope. They wont be attacked anymore and the hope for learning from Coyotito is gone too. The music is repeated throughout the story. But by throwing away the pearl they got rid of the music that was bringing along other assets. The pearl shows how even good things can have evil in them. But its not the object that makes it evil. The pearl itself is a beautiful thing. But it brings evil into the hearts of the people because of their greed.

  5. The last line of the pearl shows how the pearl is laid to rest after all the misfortune it created. Being just an object it causes no good to come on Kino and his family because everyone is filled with greed and envy that Kino and his family might have a chance to live a better life so it unleashes these series of events. The pearl at first symbolized hope and opportunity for them but as the town hears that Kino and his family found it then the pearl becomes a symbol of evil and greed.Kino's people have lived in oppression for 400 yrs. by the Spanish and finding something as valuable as a pearl means fortune (being rich with money) so they do anything in order to try to obtain the pearl so they can live better lives.

  6. 1.i think that the pearly is a plane object. It is really just a rock, so why is it so important. Its important because we make it worth something. In the story the pearly wasn't evil it was the people who had greed and evil with in them self's.The pearly only brings out what the people all ready had with in them self's. It was never the pearly who compleatly change the people it was the people. The reason the athor said what he said because he was telling us that the pearly is really the inecent one in it all,and all the people hed a little evil song and greed in them.

  8. The last line of the pearl means that the pearl was back were it belonged. I feel like the pearl was been evil to Kino and Juana because it wanted to go back to the sea...its true home. When they finally threw it back into the sea the pearl had peace and so did Kino and Juana. The pearl is not with them anymore and they just look in the distance at were the pearl might be right now. The evil and greed has left them and I hope that they might be able to move on after the terrible experiences they had with it.

  9. I believe that the pearl's music drifting away to nothing is a sign that with the pearl leaves the pain and suffering Kino and his family had been dealing with!! The pearl shows that anyone can have an evil personality when it comes to money, and that they would do ANYTHING TO GET IT. It's effect on the family ruined they're lives. They're home was burned down and Kino's canoe destroyed. The pearl shows that anything can happen and no matter what, if your a good person it will come back to you. Kino was a good man and him finding the pearl was god thanking him. Coyotito had to be killed before he finally got rid of the pearl. His baby dead, he threw the pearl, and with it the evil song was gone.

  10. I believe that the pearl was not an evil or a good. The pearl was like a human in personality. WE always want more than we can have and all the pearl seemed to want was to be were it was formed and came from.
The music of the pearl was, to me, was a mix of the song of the family and the song of the evil. The pearl represented evil, greed, hope and opportunity. The story shows that the pearl could be the best object in the world and the pearl could also kill out of greed.
The pearl was a burden on Kino's family. They had to run for their lives to keep such a small object out of their own greed.
To me, the pearl symbolized a human in a way it wanted to be the center of attention and the pearl was both good and evil, it was human.

  11. This means that when kino threw the pearl into the water that the bad and good of the pear are slowly drifting out of there lives and everything is going back to normal.Even though that they threw away a good oppertunity, they kept there family together and happy, all though when they go back to there home nobody knows what the people that said they were there friends will act like now that the pearl is gone.

  12. The music of the pearl disappearing means that the pearl is gone, that song isn't needed anymore. The pearl made great suffering to Kino's family including killing of Kino and Juana's only so, Coyotito the memory of what the song was being thrown away like the pearl in the sea. The Pearl symbolizes a gift that comes with a price, like the poison apple in snow white and the seven dwarves. Snow White she's getting an apple as a gift to eat and she ends up dieing from it once she takes a bite. The pearl easily had it's screaming effects on the society of the town and the native village. This pearl forces a doctor to try to kill Coyotito with a poison, for three professional killers to track and kill Coyotito in the act. It makes Kino life becomes a crumbling mess while his mind is twisted even more so. The town wants this great pearl just so they can be richer with more unneeded money. The village doesn't want the pearl, they want what the pearl can do, to lead them out of poverty and discrimination.

  13. I think the last sentence in the pearl means that the pearl is gone the same way it appeared, out of no where, Kino suddenly got a huge fortune thinking it was for the better, but it turned against Kino and now the fortune has disappeared just as abruptly as it appeaered. I think the song of the pearl disappearing means that it is over, sort of like the moment the pearl was found, that is when the whole story changed, and the integration of the pearls music into the other songs Kino hears is clearly seen, the pearls song is something that cannot be held, it wants to be in the sea, like the song was a cry, that it had been removed from its threshold. The pearl itself to Kino and Juana is a hope, opportunity, but it also means danger, evil, greed, because the pearl makes everyone that is not the holder to house greed inside and greed makes them want it to the extent of murder or thievery. But Kino and Juana know the affects of the pearl and they do not want it, for themselves or others, because the pearl has even taken the life of their baby Coyotito, and so their future is is gone, their hope, their future of a life not in poverty. That is also what the pearl stands for to everyone else, the pearl stands for the gateway, the key, the path, out of their terrible lives.

  14. The music in the story is a motif that symbolizes either good or bad, depending on if it is the song of the family, or the evil music. The pearl could symbolize hope, or greed. It could represent hope because of all the potential it brings to Kino's family, but it could also be greed because of how the pearl buyers will do anything to steal Kino's pearl. Overall, the pearl's effect on Kino's family was devastating, the house was burned, the canoe destroyed, and the baby killed. The pearl's symbolism in Kino's society is that poorer people will always be taken advantage of by the richer people, out of the poor's helplessness and the rich's greed. When Kino threw the pearl away into the ocean, he didn't throw a great fortune away, he threw away a dirty plague that was destroying his family.

  15. this last sentence in the book i believe explains how the pearl is feeling. evil surges throughout the pearl the longer it is away from the ocean eventually the pearls music yells out with an air of demand. when the pearl is returned though the music dies away therefore the pearl is happy.the pearl destroyed kino, it destroyed his hope, his bravery, and his only son.the pearl was not happy to be out of the ocean therefore it sucked the very life from its founder.the pearl starts beautiful with hope filled color. later the pearl is dry and ulcerous full of evil and greed and taking everything from kino. but the pearl assures kino with its demanding music making him unaware of the danger the pearl is bringing. when kino throws the pearl into the ocean "and the music of the pearl grew to a whisper then died away..." it died like evil music would die. the pearl had fused its song with the pure veins of evil, and when the pearl drops to the bottom it is relieved of evil and kino is relieved of its evil.

  16. The last line symbolizes that the evil, good, and greed. It tells of the song of the pearl throughout the story when it was a hopeful song,or an evil song and at the end where it's a crazy and insane song. The pearl might have been good by helping a poor family out. It might have been evil only bringing danger to Kino and his family. It also might have brought greed to Kino and his family from when the doctor poisoned Kino's child. There were many effects the pearl made on Kino's family. The pearl brought hope to Kino and Juana, as they visioned Coyotito sitting in school reading books. The pearl made Kino and Juana a living target, attacking and trying to steal the pearl. The pearl made the greedy doctor poison Coyotito and pretend to cure him for money. The pearl symbolizes the society Kino lives in because some of the people in his village are greedy or will stop at nothing for a stroke of good fortune. But the others are nice and helpful like Juan Tomas' family. They helped Kino and Juana in there time of need. In the last line, " And the music of pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared," Kino threw away all of the thoughts, feelings, and events on what the pearl brought him.

  17. I think that the last line means that the trouble is gone and the pearl will bring no more grief or evil. I think that the symbolism of this line is that the greed is gone for the family, but in truth the greed and evil is not gone for good it will come back maybe in another form, but it will be back. The music of the pearl has been used through out the story in good and bad situations, when it begins to fade away I figured that it means that it is over and done with. The pearl has destroyed the small family and they are finally rid of it. The pearl has had a huge effect on the society because they have discovered what the greed and evil in a society can bring to a family like Kino's, but they know it will be back and when it is they can think of what it did to Kino and Juana and Coyotito and remember that it was an evil thing that destroyed them. Although the evil may be gone for the small family so is the hope and opportunity that they too could have a better life and I think that because Coyotito was killed and the pearl is gone they may never have the good life they hoped to have. The society that they live in may never be the same again.

  18. I think that the last line of the pearl symbolizes the lift of a curse on there life, because the music of the pearl is evil toward the end of the book and when it says that "And the music of pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared." it means that the pearl that has ruined there life was finally gone. The motif of music in the pearl is a way of showing the reader that the pearl is evil because the pearls music is evil and so when they get rid of the pearl that evil is lifted from them. The pearl is also first shown as hope and a better life but then turns everyone agensed them because of greed, and so when it is thrown into the ocean the hope and a better life and the greed is gone. The pearl also hurt Kinos family the greed of the people made them try to take it so they destroyed the family house and killed Coyotito. In Kinos society the pearl is a symbol for hope and a better life as well. So some of the rich people are filled with greed and so they will go to great lengths to get the pearl so they can have a better life.

  19. I think the last line of the pearl means that the pearl was never meant to fall into the hands of people. It was to powerful and was taken from its home. The music represented the anger of the pearl and as it was thrown back into the sea, the anger slowly went out.The pearl was then, at peace. At first the pearl was such a great opportunity and hope for the family, but as the pearl got more restless it became a heavier weight on the family's shoulders. This was bringing the family to the ground and only Juana realized it. In the end, the pearl turned out to be a great power of evil to the family.

  20. I think that the last sentence is saying that just as soon as the Pearl appears it is gone. It is back where it belongs in the sea. It has gone from being this big problem to being peaceful again back in the ocean.
The pearl itself represents hope. Kino first gets the pearl and there are a bunch of new opportunities for him. He could put Coyotito in school and get a rifle. I think that it is the people that make the pearl represent greed in evil. It is what they do that makes this happen. The actual pearl is peaceful and represents hope and new opportunities.
The music of the Pearl was evil because when the family had the Pearl bad things happened. The music of evil was a repeated motif in the story. Kino also heard it when the scorpion was in the house and Coyotito got stung. And now he is hearing it more and more with the pearl. It took Coyotito to be killed for Kino to understand that the pearl only brought evil.
I think that the pearl represents greed because Kino is a very nice, and calm man. Then the pearl comes into his life and it completely changes. He wants all of these new things that normally he could not afford. He will not give up his fortune even though bad things are happening. Kino changes and is no longer the man that he used to be.
Everyone was trying to get a part of the pearl. All of the villagers hoped that in some way Kino would think of them and share his fortune. They were also greedy because of the pearl. Some people were doing horrible things just to get it. They ruined Kino's property and they attacked him. All of this happens as news spreads about Kino finding the pearl and then he throws it back and the evil is gone. Kino is no longer linked to the pearl.

  21. The last line in the book The Pearl, "And the music of the pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared." symbols the memories of the pearl and what it has caused, and done to Kino and his family. The music of the pearl in the beginning of the book was happy and peaceful, and brought excitement to the family. they saw their baby going to school and learning to read and write. Even though the pearl was a great discovery for this family, it only caused the family for to be split apart. The pearl made the towns people treat Kino's family differently because of their founding of the pearl. They knew the pearl was worth, and that the family would receive a great amount of money. The towns people would do anything to get the money. The pearl brought greed into the people. When the pearl drifted back to the bottom of the ocean, it seemed almost peaceful and calm, as if nothing ever happened. The music of the pearl must have been mixture of opportunity and evil, excitement and strong.

  22. The last line of "The Pearl" is referring to the song of the pearl that at one point was great and joyful. This music however turned dark when it brought more evil into Kino, Juana, and Coyotito's lives. The pearl brought more illness, greed, and desperation in their long days to the point where they had to take things into their own hands to defend their family.
The pearl was not only a symbol for the terrible forces of the world. In a was it was also a representation of hope, opportunity, and the ability to better their lives.Kino said that, with the money he would get for selling the pearl he would get him and his wife married, send Coyotito to school so he will learn to read and write, buy new clothes, and purchase a rifle. The pearl was the door that would open all of these opportunities and more.
There was a definite dark side to the pearl that vastly overshadowed the light. While there were good chances to arrived on that light side, the black cloud quickly engulfed Kino and Juana. Their lives were sent on a roller coaster. They discovered what the pearl was doing to their family, so at the end of the book they throw it back to the sea. This bring us to the line that we are interpreting. The music of the pearl is turning to a whisper and fading away as it drifted to the bottom of the ocean along with the evil that came to the land with it.

  23. I think that the last line in the pearl shows that the pearl had never belonged in Kino's life, and that it could not exist in Kino's world without bringing with it greed, suffering and agony. The pearl itself is purely innocent beauty, but those around it corrupt it and its image. The music of the pearl was once melodic and soothing, but as other people learn of it, it quickly turns ugly and malicious, driving Kino and his family to an uncontrollable path. After the death of Coyotito, and Kino's home and most valued possessions gone, he truly had nothing left to lose. By bringing the pearl to the small village he had introduced new concepts to the indigenous people- the breaking of a boat, greed, resentment, and jealousy. The village had never had to deal with anything like the pearl before. I think that this symbolizes how a great fortune or amazing lick can change even the most innocent people, sometimes in drastic ways. The pearl itself isn't the evil- the pearl's music was corrupted by the avarice of human nature.

  24. Throughout the story, Kino hears the music of the pearl. In the beginning, it is joyous and strong. There is also the music of the family and the music of evil. All of the music changes for as the novel progresses, the music of the pearl turns into a greedy hiss and snarl. The song of the family is a mere whimper. The song of evil is the worst by far, thundering, trampling, pounding, killing. Because of the music of the pearl, it blinds Kino, sheilding him from reality. Kino does not realize that the pearl symbolizes greed and evil. The hope that was once there has now vanished and Kino's family is in terrible danger because of the pearl. Kino wouldn't have truck Juana if it wasn't for the pearl. Kino wouldn't have killed a man because of the pearl. The pearl changed Kino and his actions which in turn changed his life and his family. The pearl made a big impact upon Kino and his famiy but also on the towns people for finding the pearl of the world in a lowly class structure such as the townspeople, its almost as if they each got a pearl. Because their little village is so poor, many of the richer village are jealous. jealous enough to burn down Kino's house, attack him more than once, try to kill him, and kill his son. This is why the statement "And the music of pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared." means so much to the story. When the pearl is returned to its home, Kino's troubles are gone and so is the frightful music of the pearl.

  25. the pearl's song had died because it no longer had an effect on Kino's life. It had been returned to the sea and its beautiful song could no longer cozen Kino's brain. It would no longer effect Kino's family because of its price. The hope and greed its beauty had inspired didn't exist anymore. The opportunity Kino had was lost forever. However the pearl wasn't evil. It only caused danger because of the price we as humans put on it.

the pearl symbolysed something different for each person in Kino's society but it usually had something to do with greed. For example the pearl symbolised a source of continued well being and income for the doctor. the pearl also symbolised a new start for the pearl buyers.

  26. The music in the story meant that the song of evil had left and went back to it's home were the pearl belongs and found it's inner peace to the sea. The pearl symbolizes all two subjects opportunity, evil.opportunity because they had a chance to sell the pearl and get it out of their lives and had some money to take coyotito to school and help he's needs.Evil because they brought more and more people to want the pearl and they would do anything to have the pearl and because of this it has cause the death of a baby and a man. The affect of the pearl on Kino's family caused the death of a baby (Coyotito) and a random man this as also caused of Kino beating he's future wife (Juana) also he had wanted more money so he traveled and still wasn't happey about the outcome.Greed and evil symbolized kino when he had the pearl. he still wanted more money so he can pay for things and he still never got what he wanted. Evil because he had killed a man and had beaten a women just for the pearl and for the money in the end had came out with nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think the last sentence means that the pearl we're supposed to the sea because there was something evil in the Pearl. I think the Pearl was such an evil thing, for everything that happen to Kino's family, for all the accidents that happen,I mean I don;t things just happen like that, It was because the Pearl because everybody wanted the Pearl, because they weren't going to give him a better price for the Pearl. And the people in the town were really nice, and they hoped that Kino could sell the Pearl, because they wanted Coyotito to studied so he could teach them. In that town, were Kino and Juana lived, there was peace, but every new day that Kino had the pearl everyday wasn't peacefully.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The last line shows that the pearl has finally put it's evil and greed to rest. Kino no longer hears the music of the pearl, and no other people will envy Kino and his pearl. But his journey with the pearl will never leave his mind, but the music and taunting of the pearl does. Kino saw himself though other eyes, the taunting eyes of the pearl. It was an illusion that tricked the mind of Kino and his whole community. The music shown throughout the book describes Kino's emotions and let's the reader know how he feels. What the author means when the pearl "Drifted to a whisper" is that the pearl's music no longer plays in Kino's head, and he cannot show any emotions the pearl gives him any longer because he has no feeling for it anymore. The pearl is gone, and Kino will try his hardest to forget it, and disconnect the taunting music from his head.

  29. I think that this means that the pearl and everything it brought the family is now permanently gone. The pearl seemed good at first but then became a symbol of anger and greed. When Kino threw it back into the ocean it symbolizes that the greed is gone and the family and the rest of the town can once again.

  30. I think that when the book "the Pearl" said that the music of the pearl disappeared, it symbolized that the pearl was finally gone. That it will never come back. That the evil is now gone because the pearl is gone. Bad things will stop in Kino's family's life. Though now kino might be thought of as the normal poor person in his community and his community might not think of him and his family being rich anymore. Things will hopefully go back to normal. But at least the pearl is no longer really needed any ways because Coyotito isn't there.

"I Believe that this means the pearl is out of their lives, the music cannot be heard, the temptation destroyed. the pearl could no longer affect Kino's mind, make him do all the things he did. The pearl that caused the family to run away from their lives, chasing after fortune, the thing that caused so much anger and greed in the town, was gone, hopefully never to be seen above ground again."

  32. I think the last line of the book represents how when they threw the pearl back, all of the hatred and evil starts drifting away, so that they can live a happy and normal life. It describes how that from now on their will be no more people trying to hurt them and follow them in search of the pearl. The effect that the pearl brought for Kino's family was severe because in the end Coyotito got shot by the rifle. As the pearl disappears, it means that the influence it had on Kino is gone. I think that the pearl brought good and bad things to Kino's family. It brought a hope of a better life but then it also brought evil and greed to kino's family because of the people around him who wanted the pearl.

  33. I think that the last line of this story means that the pearl has died and now is no longer evil because it is gone and, Kino's life is back to normal. Now, Kino knows when he finds something of great value, he has to keep it a secret, or else the same thing might happen again. The effect on Kino's family was horrible, the baby got shot because of the peal. The community in which Kino lives in has been affected by this pearl by his house getting burned down and that everybody went crazy about how big this pearl was, and how much money they can make from selling it.

  34. In the book Kino and Juana thought that the pearl would make them rich and happy, but money Isn't everything. They kept on thinking that the pearl would take all the bad things out of their life when right in front of them they had to go through so much pain trying to sell the pearl. For instance where Kino punched and kicked Juana, where Kino had to kill a man for carrying precious cargo-(The Pearl) and where he attacks and tries to Kill the people that were fallowing him and his family throughout the mountains. These horrible events showed that the pearl was trying to get away and didn't belong with them, it needed to go back into the sea where it belonged. The music kept on coming back to show that evil and dramatic events were occuring at the time.

  35. The last line of the pearl was very symbolic, it referred to the end, the end of greed, the evil, and the end of hope for the future. The music of the story was a very symbolic ever changing motif, it was a symbol for evil at times and peace at others. The pearl had many effects, Kino's family ended up being in danger a lot, and then at the end lost Coyottito because of the pearl. I think the symbolism that the pearl had on the society where Kino lived was greed among the whole village, everyone wanted it and had plans what they would do with it if they got it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The last line of the pearl I think means that Kino's life will be much better now, because over all the pearl was very bad in Kino's life. The repeated "music of the pearl" in the story seemed to mostly occur when at first good things were happening, and then bad things as times got worse for Kino, so as the music of the pearl, and the pearl itself drift away, all of the bad thing that happened also are leaving Kino's life. And how the music drifted to a whisper and then disappeared, I think symbolizes how the pearl was very slowly leaving Kino's life, because he could have not thrown it into the water, or retrieved it from the water before it completely sunk. But instead he let it go.... Something like that. Also, as the pearl and the music of it drift away, the evil of the pearl is also leaving Kino's life, so he will be able to return to a (mostly) normal life now. In the entire society that Kino lived in, the pearl symbolized the greed within everyone, so the whole town should be a better place as well, when the pearl leaves. Overall the pearl had a devastating effect on Kino's family, because there house was burnt down, and the had to leave their home and their friends and family, so Juana and Coyotito are probably very happy to see the pearl drifting away. But deep within Kino's mind, I think there might be a hint of sadness to watch it go. Just because of how much he had gone through, trying to keep it safe.

I think that the last line of the pearl reprepresented how all the evil the pearl brought upon Kino was thrown into the ocean with the pearl. But at the same time he was also throwing away his hope and operunity. I think the music countineued to repeat because it was telling the mood at the time our scene. The Pearl changed Kino's family because it brought probloms upon themselfs. It also brought them popularity amoungst there society

  38. I think the last line of the pearl, symbolized that the evil and greed brought to Kino and Juana, was no longer with them the curse that the pearl brought was broken, the pearl brought much joy and happiness, at first but then brought greed and violent actions that affected the village. The pearl caused the death of Coyotito which, made Kino realize that the pearl was pure evil and realized he should have listened to Juana the first time. The pearl affected the society of which Kino and Juana live in, by them wanting to steal the pearl and use the riches that the pearl would bring them to make their disires and dreams come true.

  39. The last line of the story shows that the pearl is back to where it wanted to be. All the evil and greed was like the pearl calling that it wanted to be back in the sea where it came from. When it was thrown into the sea, the music drifted away as well as the responsibility and the possession of the pearl. The pearl had a great toll on the family, it showed their inner greed and brought out the worst in them. All of the greed and wanting made Juana and Kino lose the most important thing to them, Coyotitio. The pearl symbolizes wealth, hope, and opportunity disguised as greed and evil. It was just an object, the people made the pearl evil. The pearl taught a great lesson to Kino and Juana and the society, that will always be known and remembered through out the town.

  40. I think the quote symbolizes how the pearl had been evil, and caused harm to Kino's family. When he finally threw it into the ocean, he was ridding himself from the misfortune it had caused them.
When Kino threw it in the ocean and the music drifted away, it symbolized how as the music disappeared so did their responsibility of the pearl. The music accured numerous times in the story, and I think this is because it was reminding Kino of the pearl's cruelness and terrible luck. But once Kino discarded the pearl, the music faded and finally was back in it's home, the sea.
The pearl affected their family by uncovering their greed and selfishness. I don't believe the pearl caused the greed, but more revealed it. Once the tiniest seed had been given nutrients, it blossomed into a thriving plant. Which, was definitely not a beautiful one. This also happened to the village people as well, causing the society to do things they normally would not have done. The pearl caused many of the people to act against their morals.

  41. I believe that the last line in the story symbolizes the happiness the pearl is feeling and having. I think it symbolizes this because the pearl is back where it belongs and where it wants to be forever, the large, vast ocean. I think all the evil and greed Kino's family received from the pearl was the pearls way of saying that it didn't belong in their hands. Instead the pearl belonged where it came from, the ocean. Even though the pearl brought the family a plentiful amount of evil, the family will walk away with a lesson that they will be able to learn from.

  42. The last line in the pearl means that when the music started to fade that the evil was fading with it. The pearl symbolized the greed and evil in a town filled with oppression and the pearl just brought all of that to the surface. Once the pearl faded into the ocean you realize that's where it wanted to be all along and that the effect of a new perception on life towards the family was changing once again. This was something the family learned from, something when they realized that the pearl didn't belong in their hands and that it was back where it belongs. The effect the pearl had on the town was the oppression. You saw the oppression when you read the book, but it was never really out in the open, when Kino and Juana show the pearl to the town you see the greed and the arguments coming forward. The pearl showed anger and greed and evil, that was disguised as happiness and hope and luckiness that the family saw. You really start to see the evil in the actions of Kino and the change of personality of the family and everyone around them. As the pearl and music fades away into the sea the evil, greed and anger fades with it and the family is left with nothing, but the most important part is that they have the lesson to learn from.

  43. In the pearl the last line symbolizes the end of there misery, the end of there greed against each other and other people, the danger and the bad music. Its the end of all of Juana's and Kino's suffering from always worrying about when the next bad thing will happen. The pearl was a great power that can change a person, but very unstable and can turn against the holder, or it can bring them there dreams. It all depends on what you believe it can do. You can be mean and make it do evil things but you could also give to other people and have it do great things. It brought a great lesson to there family by showing them that they are happy the way they are and when they brought something with great power people changed and to my the weren't really a family cause family would reason with each other and Kino didn't with Juana, when she wanted to throw the pearl back so there anger and trouble would be gone.

  44. I believe the quote at the end of the story showed that the evil that the pearl brought to Kino’s family along with the opportunity that his family had to change their lifestyle and their future just disappeared as the pearl sank and the pearl’s song came to an end. Also now that the pearl, the wealth, that Kino had just disappeared, Kino and Juana went back to rebuild their life.

  46. The music of the pearl symbolizes the end, an end to the pearl, adventure, Kino and Juana's old life, even Coyotito. The pearl is just really an object but it brings evil and dead hope to Kino and Juana, the finders of this pearl. Many would see the pearl and see only beauty, for the pearl's shiny coat hides all sin. When Kino first finds the pearl he only see's what he will gain from the pearl. But really the pearl brings death, and misfortune. If I had to explain the pearl in one word it would be greed. So many people did so many things just to try and get to the pearl, all bring hate and misfortune to Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. First Kino lives a happy, simple life, a life of which he knows. But then when he finds the pearl Kino's old life is gone, and all that remains are his friends and family. before the pearl Kino was safe and delighted in the simple things, now kino's new world is an unsafe place and you should trust no one. The pearl is truly just an object, it's the people that make it what it is.

  47. The last line of the pearl shows how the pearl is laid to rest after all the misfortune and trouble it created. Being just an object it causes no good to come on Kino and his family because everyone is filled with greed and envy since Kino and his family might have a chance to live a better life so it unleashes these series of events. The pearl at first symbolized hope and opportunity for them so they can make things better for themselves but as the town hears that Kino and his family found it then the pearl becomes a symbol of evil and greed as everyone tries to get for themselves. Kino's people have lived in oppression for 400 yrs. by the Spanish and finding something as valuable as a pearl means not only that they have a chance to rise up from their oppression but it means they've found a fortune of a lifetime. After all this may be the one and only chance to change their life for the better so they (meaning the people of the village) will do anything in order to try to obtain the pearl so they can live better lives or use it for their own selfish desires.

  48. I think that the pearl is a plain object. It is really just a rock, so why is it so important. Its important because we make it worth something. In the story the pearl wasn't evil it was the people who had greed and evil with in them selves .The pearl only brings out what the people all ready had with in them selves. It was never the pearl who completely change the people it was the people. The reason the author said what he said was because he was telling us that the pearly is really the innocent one in it all. All the people had a little evil song and greed within them selves. The music was there to show that the pearl was beautiful and completely innocent. the pearl will always be blamed for the people's greed. In truth it will always be innocent.

  50. The symbolism of the last line of The Pearl shows that the pearl was back home where it's supposed to be. Everything is now normal for the pearl but for Kino and Juana it's not. The pearl has created a disaster for Kino and Juana because Coyotito is gone. The great fortune had made them try to go out to the big city to sell the pearl but instead of selling it and Coyotito going to school, Coyotito has been shot and is now dead. The pearl is home in the sea happy to be there and satisfied but Kino and Juana are not quite home and definitely satisfied.
In this story, the pearl had symbolized many things such as greed, for it has mad many people go crazy for the pearl and want it all to themselves. The pearl also symbolizes hope and wealth because it can make Kino's family smarter and full of power with the things they get with all the money that's worth the pearl.
The pearls symbolism in the society in which Kino lives would probably be wealth and power. Wealth, because since they're less wealthy than the other people around like the doctor, they would be able to get more things. They would get a gun, to symbolize power for Kino. And they would make Coyotito go to school and therefore, Kino's family would be smarter than dealers and wealthy people around them and they would not be cheated on anymore.

  51. The Pearl, a symbolic representation of what opportunities lay ahead of Kino's family, and the greed it created. Greed led Kino to killing, if he had only gotten rid of the Pearl when it was starting to cause problems he wouldn't have been led to such extremes. Though it's human nature to always want more he could of fought back the temptations of having a better life for his family. Overwhelmed with wealth Kino faced the harsh reality of the surrounding societies. With just one thing powering their greed the music of the pearl started to fade and as it was thrown into the sea everyone's greed vanished along with the pearl.
